Description

Rich simple syrup is a concentrated sugar syrup made with a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio. It's sweeter and thicker than standard 1:1 simple syrup, dissolves into cold drinks more easily, and provides more body and longer shelf life — ideal for many classic cocktails and syrups-based recipes.

History

Simple syrup has long been used as a convenient liquid sweetener in bartending and cooking. The "rich" 2:1 version is a traditional variant used where more sweetness, viscosity, and stability are desired (in cocktails, punches, and some desserts).

Instructions

Step 1.
1. Choose measurement method (weight recommended for consistency):
- Weight: 400 g granulated white sugar + 200 g water.
- Volume (less precise): 2 cups granulated sugar + 1 cup water.
2. Sterilize a storage bottle or jar: wash thoroughly, rinse, and (optional) pour boiling water into the container then discard and let air-dry or dry in a low oven.
3. In a small saucepan combine the water and sugar.
4. Gently heat over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Do not boil vigorously — you only need enough heat to dissolve sugar.
5. Once dissolved and the liquid is clear, remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
6. (Optional) Skim any foam, then pour cooled syrup into the sterilized bottle through a clean funnel.
7. Label the bottle with preparation date. Refrigerate immediately.
8. Before use, check for cloudiness, off odors, or mold. Discard if present.
Step 2.
Notes/tips:
- For very clear syrup, avoid boiling and strain through a fine mesh if needed.
- Use weight measurements for repeatable results.
- Adjust quantities proportionally for larger or smaller batches.

Storage

Store refrigerated in an airtight, sterilized container. Label with date. Keep cold and use within the recommended shelf life. Discard if cloudy, foamy, or mold appears. For longer storage, freeze in small portions.
