History

Glühwein, or mulled wine, has roots in ancient Roman times and became popular in Germany and Austria during the Middle Ages, often enjoyed during Christmas markets and winter festivities.

Instructions

Step 1.
- In a medium saucepan, combine red wine, sugar, and lemon juice over low heat.
Step 2.
- Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and nutmeg to the mixture.
Step 3.
- Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is heated, but do not let it boil.
Step 4.
- Allow to simmer for about 5 minutes to infuse the spices.
Step 5.
- Remove from heat and strain into heatproof mugs or glasses.
Step 6.
- Garnish with a cinnamon stick and an orange slice before serving.
