A classic New Orleans cocktail, the Sazerac combines the bold flavors of rye whiskey with absinthe and a touch of bitters, served over ice and traditionally garnished with a lemon twist.

History

Originating in the 19th century, the Sazerac is one of the oldest cocktails, thought to have been created in New Orleans using Sazerac de Forge et Fils Cognac before transitioning to rye whiskey due to availability.

Instructions

Step 1.
- Chill an Old Fashioned glass by filling it with ice water.
Step 2.
- In a separate mixing glass, add 2 oz of rye whiskey and 1 sugar cube.
Step 3.
- Dash 2-3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters over the sugar cube and muddle until dissolved.
Step 4.
- Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir well until chilled.
Step 5.
- Discard the ice water from the chilled Old Fashioned glass.
Step 6.
- Rinse the glass with absinthe, swirling it around to coat the sides, then discard the excess.
Step 7.
- Strain the rye mixture into the prepared glass.
Step 8.
- Express the oils from a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in as a garnish.

3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
0.25 oz Absinthe
1 Lemon twist (garnish)
