Description

A simple dry blend of granulated sugar and ground cinnamon used to rim glasses, coat garnishes, or dust cocktails and coffee-based drinks. Provides sweet, warm spice and visual appeal.

History

Cinnamon sugar is a longtime culinary staple—used in baking and confections—and was adapted for drinks and cocktail garnishes as bar culture expanded the use of flavored rims and finishing sugars.

Instructions

Step 1.
1. Choose your ratio: for mild flavor use 1 cup sugar to 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon; for medium 1 cup sugar to 1.5 tablespoons; for strong 1 cup sugar to 2 tablespoons.
Step 2.
2. Place the measured granulated sugar in a medium bowl.
Step 3.
3. Add the measured ground cinnamon to the sugar.
Step 4.
4. Whisk thoroughly for 20–30 seconds to evenly distribute the cinnamon and break up any clumps. Alternatively, transfer to a jar, seal, and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
Step 5.
5. Optional: Sift the mixture through a fine mesh sieve for an extra-fine, uniform texture.
Step 6.
6. Store in an airtight container once cool/settled and label with date and ratio used.
Step 7.
7. To rim a glass: moisten rim with citrus, syrup, or egg white, then dip into the cinnamon sugar and tap off excess.

Storage

Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong odors. If clumping occurs, break up with a fork or sift. Refrigeration is not necessary and may introduce moisture.
