Simple Saline Solution
Type: prep Difficulty: easy Yield: 250 mL (approx. 1 cup) Shelf life: 30 days Views: 1

Description

A concentrated saline (salt) solution for finishing cocktails. Adds salinity and savory depth to drinks, helping balance sweetness and enhance other flavors. Made with non-iodized salt and water at a measured concentration for consistent dosing.

History

Saline solutions are adapted from culinary and medical uses; bartenders adopted them in modern craft cocktailing to add controlled salinity and umami to drinks without adding liquid bulk or altering texture significantly.

Instructions

Step 1.
1) Weigh or measure ingredients: 250 ml (approx. 1 cup) filtered water and 12.5 g non-iodized fine salt (kosher or fine sea salt). If using teaspoons, 12.5 g ≈ 2.1 level teaspoons. 2) Heat the water to just below boiling (or bring to a simmer) to help dissolve and sanitize; remove from heat. 3) Add the measured salt to the hot water and stir until fully dissolved. 4) Let the solution cool to room temperature. 5) Transfer to a clean, sanitized glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid. Label with name and date. 6) Refrigerate. For bar use: add saline sparingly—start with 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon (≈0.5–1.25 ml) per cocktail, or adjust by drop/dash to taste.

Storage

Keep refrigerated in a clean, airtight container. Label with preparation date. Discard if the solution becomes cloudy, develops an off odor, or shows visible contamination. Use within the stated shelf life for best quality.
