History

The Sazerac is one of the oldest known cocktails, originating in New Orleans in the 19th century. The traditional recipe has evolved, but the essence remains a combination of bitters, sugar, and a spirit, with absinthe as a defining characteristic.

Instructions

Step 1.
- Chill an Old Fashioned glass by filling it with ice water.
Step 2.
- In a mixing glass, muddle 1 sugar cube and 2 dashes of Peychaud's bitters together until the sugar dissolves.
Step 3.
- Add 2 ounces of rye whiskey (or bourbon) to the mixing glass and fill it with ice.
Step 4.
- Stir gently until well chilled.
Step 5.
- Discard the ice water from the chilled Old Fashioned glass.
Step 6.
- Add a splash of absinthe to the glass, swirl it around to coat the interior, and then discard the excess.
Step 7.
- Strain the chilled whiskey mixture into the prepared glass.
Step 8.
- Express the oils from a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in as garnish.
