History

The Martinez is often considered one of the precursors to the Martini, originating in the 1860s. It was popular among gold miners and saloon patrons of the American West, reputedly created either in Martinez, California, or by an inventive bartender.

Instructions

Step 1.
- Chill the Nick and Nora glass.
Step 2.
- In a mixing glass, add the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters.
Step 3.
- Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir until well chilled.
Step 4.
- Strain the mixture into the chilled glass.
Step 5.
- Garnish with a lemon twist.
