History

The Vieux Carré originated in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the 1930s, combining various spirits to create a complex yet balanced beverage. The Scotch variant adds a smoky depth to the traditional blend.

Instructions

Step 1.
- Chill an Old Fashioned glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water.
Step 2.
- In a mixing glass, combine 1.5 ounces of Scotch whisky, 0.75 ounces of sweet vermouth, 0.75 ounces of Benedictine, and two dashes of Angostura bitters.
Step 3.
- Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir until well chilled.
Step 4.
- Strain the mixture into the chilled Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
Step 5.
- Garnish with a twist of lemon peel, expressing the oils over the drink before placing it on top.
